So is “immersion” holding back Fallout modding? Of course not. There are thousands of mods out there, and the tools are there for you to do your own. But you’re under no obligation to agree with me. My own personal inspiration is Arwen’s Realism Tweaks overhaul, and I’ve tried to do something similar but on an ala carte basis. For me, immersion means something that makes the gaming experience richer, deeper, usually a bit more realistic, almost always less convenient. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t, but all of these doodads tend to fall under the much-maligned “immersion” gaming label. I like writing doodads, little coding experiments that bump players out of their comfort zones a little. So the Fallout mods I write tend to screw with game mechanics. I’ve been hacking scripts professionally and personally for decades, from Perl to Python, and I have close to zero illustration, 3D modeling, or sound production talent. Even console players could shake and shape the game to see what would come loose. And it had an unprecedented level of tools and options for customizing it, whether you wanted to get into the code or not. It’s a sort of tradition in the Fallout community to bitch about Bethesda and their games.įor any of its flaws, Fallout 4 was a major leap forward. Obsidian did a better job with New Vegas, but even that game didn’t really get kicked into gear until Josh Sawyer released his mod. It crashed constantly, locked up at the worst times, had mechanics that barely made sense, and as it stood, it didn’t age well at all. Fallout 3, as shipped, was a piece of junk. Sometimes, someone stakes the position that “immersion” – the interest of modders to add realism elements to the game – is somehow holding the community back. Usually, someone blames Bethesda for not producing the exact game that they themselves wanted. You see a lot of “immersive” mods on Nexus these days that tack the word onto their descriptions purely for irony and humor reasons.Įvery so often, you’ll see a thread on the Nexus Forums, declaring the Fallout mod community’s demise. Some take it deadly seriously, fighting the ideological fight to maintain the Fallout series as an RPG experience that remains true to the original isometric 90’s games. In the Fallout modding community, few words get people riled up quite like “immersive”.
